To define a new ping resource to monitor, select File / New Resource / Ping from the file menu. This will open the ping resource window.
Define the machine name you wish to ping, set the number of attempts, and the acceptable loss tolerance. You can also set whether a failure alert is sent if the host is just unreachable or if the network latency is greater than a set limit.
On the bottom of the ping resource window is a "Test" button. This will cause Overseer to try contacting the resource to verify that it was defined properly and that it can be reached.
Click on the "General" icon on the right hand side to bring up additional configuration options for the new service resource.
In this section, you can define the name of the resource (or how the Overseer console will display it as), which group it resides in, and any comments that you might specify for it.
Click on the "Monitoring" icon on the right hand side to bring up additional configuration options for the service resource.
Within the monitoring section, you can define your how often the resource is checked, when you want to be notified, how often you want to be notified, and to define a maximum time frame for which you want to be notified. There is also an option here to tell Overseer to notify you if the resource recovers.
Click on the "Notifications" icon on the right hand side to bring up additional configuration options for the service resource.
The "Notifications" section allows you to enable or disable resources which should be alerted should the resource go down.
